bo liao rambling

researching for hostels to stay in rome, i noticed a bizarro phenomenon.
Many of the hostels springing up have taken on American/Brit pop cultural references as names. I mean seriously: 'Hotel Carlito's Way, Hostel Happy Days, Hotel Pink Floyd, Hotel Fawlty Towers etc etc"? I hope backpacker central in Rome dies not turn out to be Little Frat-America or something. horrors upon horrors. Wall to wall frat boys and their sorority chickadees on their pub crawls, toga parties and pizza nights! thrillsville.

anyhoo, i'm kinda taken by fawlty towers. i would stay there just for the name alone. haha.

days of gelato, buffalo mozzarella, real pasta, real pizza, ensalata, parma ham, and REAL ITALIAN COFFEE.
20 days to rome! whoopee!

currently watching:
Full Metal Alchemist. so gonna hunt down figurines of Alphonse and Edward Elric
American Idol. I know. I know. but it's so fascinating! Am kinda rooting for Bo Bice now.

currently reading:
Lonely Planet: Italy
The Irreverent Guide to Rome
www.televisionwithoutpity.com - it's a horrible addiction

currently listening:
my mother's super loud favourite taiwanese talk-show in the background.

hey hey hey, in Rome...

1) eat bruschetta and gelatto. Yums. Tomatoes on bread never tasted so good. Actually bring enough dough to pig out for a good meal with wine at least once. The real-deal tiramisu and panacotta will spoil every other one u try for the rest of yr life.

2) look out for this lingerie store called Intimissimi. It's a chain with lovely stuff (at least it was lovely in 2002 :) On the pricey side though).

3) check out the ruins everywhere. Ruins are to Rome what subway stations are to other cities. Some ruins are nothing more than dilapidated columns. Others are spanking white and lavish like restored birthday cakes.

4) Be prepared to do lots of walking. Try and get a hostel close by the sights. Commuting can be difficult cos there's no subway in the city centre (at least there wasn't in 2002) and buses tricky for non-Italian speakers.

5) And of course, visit the Colisseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Vatican!
